Choosing A Mate
Who could possibly ever be good enough?
I'm joking, of course. There are many, many handsome and healthy prospective mates for Ruby in North America. But my highest priority is to have the lowest coefficent of inbreeding (COI) possible to strengthen the genetic health of the puppies. Genetic diversity is very desirable.
The Silver Lining
The silver lining to the fact that pure bred dogs are prone to genetic disease is that researchers like Dr. Elaine Ostrander, are able to identify genetic diseases which helps people who suffer from those same diseases.
